Postcards from Dubrovnik Part 1

Hope you all had a lovely long holiday weekend! Alessio and I had a super time in Paris, but more about that another time!

During the spring holidays we went to Dubrovnik, Croatia along with my parents for just under one week. Dubrovnik is a lovely old city and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many churches, museums, fortresses to visit and there are many steps around the city so be prepared to climb! The city is surrounded by walls which you can walk along, it is 2km. We did this and you get awesome views of roof tops, the coast and of Lokrum island. There are some cafe/bars to stop for refreshments if you are feeling a bit puffed out!

There are many possibilities for day trips, there are many islands to visit, but because the sea was a bit choppy we never managed to go on any. You can visit Bosnia, Montenegro and other cities in Croatia which are all worth doing.

Dubrovnik is a very popular place and even in April it was quite busy, so if you visit in the summer months be prepared for loads of visitors.

It is another long weekend coming up and I am going to Helsinki with two friends Hannah and Riikka!

Postcards of Porto Part 2

So awhile back I posted the first part of our trip to Porto in August, so here is the last part. We ended up in Porto after our week in the Azores with my father. This is a gorgeous city and well worth a trip. We planned to do a day trip to Coimbra but unfortunately I did not plan it so well, so we did not make it.  Here are the other things we did:

1) We visited Porto Cathedral, it is one of the city`s oldest monuments

2) Sao Bento Train Station, you might think why would you visit a train station apart from to leave the city but this train is beautiful. The historical station is know for it tiles (azulejo) which depicts scenes of the history of Portugal.

3) The Serralves Museum, this was a lovely museum and it had a great big park. In the park there were sculptures to find which of course Alessio liked to do!

4) Hop on/off bus this is normally not what I do, but for one day we thought and Alessio really wanted to go on it too!

5) The fantastic houses/flats with there coloured walls and balconies which I really liked to see

6) Port tasting, I really wanted to do this but with Alessio I decided not too. So the next time I visit Porto that will be on my list.

So if you have not been to this city then you really must, it is beautiful!

Geneva Jet d`Eau

The weekend we had in Geneva seems ages ago, when in fact it was only the weekend before the last. Probably because I have been at home all last week and will continue to be this week also due to my small accident with my foot, everything goes slow!

Anyway we had a great time in Geneva and of all the sights to see in the city the water jet (Jet d`Eau) remains my favorite one. It was installed in 1886 a bit more downstream from it present location, then in 1891 it was moved to where it is now. Since 2003 is operates during the day all year, except in frost and very windy weather.

In the evening my father and I went out for walk and we went to see the jet. It was illuminated red and looked pretty cool! We went right up to it as did many other people and took some photos!

European Football Friendly Match in St.Gallen

This weekend was quite the football one! On Saturday Alessio had a match which his team lost again, sadly and in the evening we watched the Champions League Final. On Sunday we went to St.Gallen to see the friendly match between Spain and Bosnia.

The match started at 6pm but beforehand we walked around the old part of the city for a short while. I had not been in St.Gallen for at least 10 years so it all new for me. The old part really looked lovely and would have liked to explore a bit more, but Alessio was not so keen. I anyway wanted to get to the stadium and get our seats.

We were in the Spanish section and it eventually got very busy but in general there were more Bosnian fans. Since the champion league final was played the night before with two Spanish teams their players were not going to be there, but I was really hoping to see the Barcelona players. Sadly they were also not present, but it was still a great match, really exciting.

This was only my second time at a football match and we both really liked the atmosphere and both sets of fans were very loud! Definitely would go again, both Alessio and myself want to see FC Barcelona play in Camp Nou. Not an easy task to do but will try for the next season!
