Photo of the Week - Hanging Bike!

For the photo of the week, I go back to summer 2013 and the trip to Malmo we took from Copenhagen.     We had been walking for ages to see the Turning Torso building and afterwards we headed back to the train station. It did take awhile and it was bloody warm and I think by this stage of the day we were all just wanting to be on the train. There were some shops really near to the Santiago Calatrava building and there I saw this bicycle hanging. I thought is looked rather nice and took a photo, not sure what kind of shop it was anymore.

During our week long stay in Copenhagen we took a trip over the Oresund bridge which is longest combined rail and road bridge in Europe. A very pleasant and comfortable journey in no time we reached Malmo, the third largest city in Sweden.

First of all we wondered around the city to get our bearings as you do on city visits, we saw lots of interesting design shops, which we all wanted to look at especially my mother.

For lunch we bought sandwiches from a supermarket and found a lovely park to sit and eat them, luckily near by there was a wonderful playground which kept Alessio happy for a while.

In the afternoon we took a boat cruise, it was nice to get a fresh breeze for a bit. The boat cruise took us to lots of places we would not have had time to walk there, Malmo being big port which is still active we heard lots of information about it.

We stopped for a glass of wine after the boat tour finished while deciding what we should do next, I wanted to see the Turning Torso building. So we began our walk to see it and it took a lot longer than we thought and it was very hot too. Finally we got to it and my father and I found it quite interesting, unlike my mother!

If you are in Copenhagen, it is well worth a trip to see this city, we did think about visiting more places in this part of Sweden, but decided to see more of Denmark.

Next year will be visiting Norway for the first time, I am really looking forward to that!

Postcards from Stockholm

Back in July I went for a weekend to Stockhom, the main reason was to see Calvin Harris, (who was brilliant by the way) and I already posted about it. The Saturday was spent wondering around the old part of Stockholm called Gamla Stan, which is a beautiful part of the city to explore.

Here you can see Stockholm Cathedral, the Royal Palace, lots of museums, Ridderholmen Church and lots of other grand buildings. It is one of the best preserved medieval city centres in Europe, it has the oldest square in Stockholm called Stortorget.

We wondered around most the streets looking at the shops, which of course has lots of lovely design shops. It took us ages to decide on a restaurant and when we did, we both had a delicious salad, then we decided to head back to the hostel. Our feet were killing us, but we still took a long journey back walking via the sea. We stopped off at the town hall, I think where we saw lots of weddings going on, they certainly had perfect weather and views.

The following day we only had the morning to explore so we stayed again by the sea and walked further out. It seemed like most Swedes were out and about doing sport and sunbathing, we sat for a while watching some people kayaking, it was certainly quite popular that Sunday.

Then it was back to the hostel to grab our stuff and head to the airport, and another great weekend was finished.

Turning Torso in Malmo

Turning Torso is a residential building designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it is tallest building in Scandinavia. It is 190m high, it twists 90 degrees from bottom to top and has 54 storeys, in it there are amongst other things 147 flats.

It is based on a sculpture called Twisting Torso also by Calatrava, who is a trained sculptor, architect and engineer. His main office is in Zurich, he also designed the Stadelhofen railway station here in Zurich.

While we were in Copenhagen we went by train to Malmo, towards the end of the day we went to see the building. I really wanted to see it up close as I think it is a fascinating building, I like how it twists around. The views are almost certainly amazing and no doubt living there must cost a lot of money.

Photo of the Week - Oh la la!

While my sister and I were wandering around Stockholm, we walked passed the town hall ( I think) and looked inside and thought it looked lovely. So we decided to explore the huge courtyard and the sea, as it was situated right on the front.

Imagine our surprise we saw not only one couple getting married, maybe around 6 couples tying the knot. Then I noticed this lady showing her garter to her new husband who was taking the photo, and I also took a photo! She did look really lovely! This was certainly unexpected to see, but really nice.

Calvin Harris in Stockholm!

The first weekend in July was spent in Stockholm and the main reason for the trip was to see Calvin Harris live. It really was a amazing time, we saw two djs in the beginning called Heyman & Müller, then next was Burns and finally out came Calvin. The whole show was just brilliant with the lights, lasers and special effects like smoke and other stuff.

The venue was also very interesting, at the Ericsson Globe Arena, which is the currently the largest hemispherical building in the world, it is shaped like a white ball and took 2.5 years to build.

If you ever get a chance to see him live, then I would recommend it totally. Next I will see Robbie Williams in Zurich, looking forward to that!

Stockholm Words!

Last weekend I was in Stockholm with some friends, it was a great weekend and we had lovely weather. We did lots of walking and enjoyed ourselves looking at everything. We saw lots of lovely design shops as you would expect to see in Sweden, and I fancied it all!

On the walk back to our hostel went via the shore and saw lots of lovely boats. So many people out and about, we sat and people watched too. I will be back in Sweden in August but only for a day to see Mälmo as we are staying for a week in Copenhagen and we will do a day trip. Looking forward to that!
