Pictures from Bergen

During the winter break in February Alessio and I went to visit Bergen, and yes it was rather chilly! Bergen is the second largest city in Norway and it lies on the west coast and it has a huge port. There are many trips to take to see the fantastic fjords, we did a short one of 3 hours, but you can take ones that last the whole day or more!

There are quite a number of things to do with kids, we visited the aquarium and a viking museum. We also visited the Hanseatic Museum and Kode Art museum which had a part for kids. There is also a funicular to take you up to Mount Floyen 320m above see level, it has brilliant views of the city and surrounding area.

Bryggen the old wharf was very interesting to explore, you can walk in between the buildings and of course very colourful. There was quite a lot of street art which I do like to see!

We really enjoyed visiting Bergen in spite of the weather, of course visiting in the spring or summer is better as you can spend more time outdoors.

The weather we are having at the moment kind of reminds me of my trip to Bergen in February! I am not joking it is really cold and windy here, okay maybe not as cold as this boat trip but pretty dam near!

One of the highlights was a 3 hour boat trip to visit one of the many fjords in Norway. The choice is endless, there are many different types and lengths of boat cruises to take. Since I was with Alessio I opted for a 3 hour fjord trip to Mostraumen, part of the Osterfjord, so hopefully I would not have to hear endless "is it nearly finished or how long now to go".

It started at 10am and there were many people waiting to go on this trip, once on we went up on deck and found a seat. Slowly the boat started and the captain informed everyone of the sights on both sides. Once we were out of the Bergen harbour, the boat started to move faster and that is when it got much colder!

We both braved the outside for at least 30mins and we were rewarded with such amazing scenery. Typical Norwegian colourful houses, bridges, snow covered hills and further into the trip frozen waterfalls!

We then got into the narrower part of the fjord and the captain told us that a few weeks earlier the sea here had been frozen. Now is had mostly melted but still in certain parts the boat had to move very slowly and break the ice. It was quite exciting being on a boat braking the ice, then we moved right up close to one of the frozen waterfalls and some of the passengers were able to collect water with a bucket and drink it!

It was a great boat trip and certainly one of the best I have ever been on, seeing the many frozen waterfalls was amazing.

Bergen Bryggen

In February Alessio and I visited the Norwegian city of Bergen on the west coast. Bergen has lots to offer visitors and one of the most important sights is Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen.  It has been on UNESCO list for World Heritage since 1979.

In the 13th century the Hanseatic League set up one of their  four European offices on the Wharf called Bryggen, the city was and still is an important port for Norway. There have been many fires as the buildings are made from wood, therefore the buildings have been rebuilt at different times. They are fantastic to see, we wondered around the narrow alley ways and climbed up to see some of the shops.

It is midweek, which means photo of the week and it is from Bergen again! We saw this statue quite by accident while walking around Bergen. To be honest no idea what this statue is supposed to be, there was a sign but only in Norwegian.

Bergen Doors!

Hello, I am back from my trip to Bergen, Norway. Alessio and I had a great time, saw lots of great museums, a fab boat trip to see  Osterfjord and Mostraumen, lovely buildings and architecture.

After visiting the aquarium we decided to visit the Maritime Museum and to reach here we walked through this lovely area with these fab houses and doors. Alessio was quite sick and tired of me taking photos and I could have taken loads more! There will be more posts about to come about Bergen next month!

Holmenkollen Ski Jump Oslo

Our trip to Oslo, Norway in April was a busy 5 days and we managed to see lots of the city and the surrounding area. We took a train up to the Holmenkollen ski jump which opened in March 2010 it towers above Oslo and it boasts the name of the world´s most modern ski jump and

It also houses the ski museum which we did not visit, it is quite impressive to see it and imagine someone jumping off it! Of course I think it would be much more impressive covered in snow, completely busy and some ski jumping going on!

Anyway it also offers some amazing views of the Oslo fjords and while we were up there, we stopped at the Frognerseteren restaurant and had some wine. We were still able to sit outside albeit with our coats still on. Alessio amused himself playing on the grass.
